Registration is free, but a donation of $5 per person or $40 as a group rate for groups of 8 or more from the same church or cooperative is suggested.

Each session will be held twice. In order to provide adequate space for each session we ask that you select which session you plan to attend for Breakout One and which for Breakout Two. Want to attend them all? Don’t worry. Handouts for all the classes will be made available online after the seminar. Please allow two weeks for posting.

Keynote Speaker

Bishop Peggy Johnson, former pastor of Christ United Methodist Church of the Deaf in Baltimore, was elected July 17, 2007 to be a bishop in The United Methodist Church. Bishop Johnson's heart has been shaped over the years by her ministry to people in the margins. Her work in the Deaf community draws people from every socio-economic group, including the very poor, who bring with them a vast array of social, human and spiritual needs.

The church, she said, is at its best when it opens it doors to those who society looks down upon. "I am a strong believer in the love that draws people into our world," Johnson said. "We have to be out there doing love."

Her ministry there has taken her around the world, where she helped to start or enhance Deaf ministries in Zimbabwe, Cuba, and a myriad of other places in the United States and abroad.

Johnson received her doctorate from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington and is the author of the book "A Joyful Silence."

Breakout Sessions

General Conference Legislation

Instructor: Rev. Dr. Terri Rae Chattin

This session will be led by TR Chattin and will discuss the rules and procedures to be followed at General Conference. It will also summarize the issues that are important to our Conference. Those elected to represent the Conference at General Conference should attend.

Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence is on the rise and this session addresses ways to recognize individuals who may be at risk. For those who counsel women (and men) who are abused this session will provide the do’s and don’ts regarding assistance.

Men Supporting Women

Instructor: Rev. David Roberts

What are effective ways that men can support women in the Church without the appearance of "the strong helping the weak" or the implication that women cannot accomplish great things unless men help them? Rev. David Roberts is a pastor from the Baltimore Washington Conference who sits on our BWC COSROW committee.

Do No Harm: GCSRW and COSROW Responding to Sexual Ethics

Instructor: Rev. Dr. Sally Dolch

Become informed about the nature and scope of the sexual ethics challenge in our churches. Learn how GCSRW leads the UMC response to Sexual Ethics through systemic advocacy, education, and training, and compassionate advocacy with limited staff and a large network of collaborators. Then make the connection between GCSRW collaborators and your local COSROW’s healing impact through advocacy, response and education.
